The Donkey Story : Shake It Off and Step Up

I was doing a project for my wife when I stumbled upon Bo Sanchez' Easter Sunday article. He shared a story of a donkey.

One day, a donkey fell in an old well. 

The donkey’s owner looked down and realized the old well was too deep to pull out his donkey. It was hopeless to rescue his beloved animal. 

It was heartbreaking, but he knew there was only one thing to do—to bury his donkey. 

And his neighbors came to shovel dirt in the well. 

When the dirt fell on his back, the donkey became hysterical. How dare they bury him alive! But in a flash, a bright idea struck him. The next time dirt fell on his back, he said to himself—“All I have to do is shake it off and step up”—and that’s what he did. And it worked!

Every time dirt fell on his back, he’d say, “Shake it off and step up… Shake it off and step up…   Shake it off and step up…” 

The dirt that was meant to bury him was the same dirt that saved him. 

In life, we experience failures. We experience falling into a deep well.

We failed in our board exams for the second time. We failed in our businesses. We failed in our love life. We  failed in handling our finances. We failed in our work. We failed in almost all aspect of our lives.

The good thing is that our failure does not mean the end of everything. The fact that we survived the fall means that there's still hope. There's still something that we can do. We have a choice. We can choose to do nothing and be trapped in the well until we die or we can just shake it off (accepting our failures) and step up (use our failures to move on to the next level) just like what the donkey did in the story. The choice is ours.

I Salute Truly Rich Billionaires

This morning, I read a news article from Yahoo Philippines about an 80 year old billionaire named Han Chang-Woo. He wants to give away all his money before he die in order to improve the relations of Japan and Korea. 

"I'm no longer interested in making money but in how to spend it," Han said. "These days I'm thinking about social responsibility activities all the time."

I believe that truly rich millionaires are really thinking not just about themselves but also how can they help in improving lives of other people. 

I salute Han Chang-Woo for being a truly rich millionaire.

By the way, here are some facts about Han Chang-Woo. Han Chang-Woo is the founder of Maruhan Corp., Japan's largest operator of pachinko parlors. He generates 30 trillion won ($27 billion) in annual revenue.

The Carpenter's Final House

I got this article from Bo Sanchez' Soulfood newsletter and I felt that this is worth sharing. This story is about a old carpenter tasked to do build his last project. Enjoy reading.

One day, an elderly carpenter was about to retire.

When he told the owner of the company that he was finally leaving, the man said, “I hate to let go such a great carpenter. Before you retire, can I ask a favor? Can you make one last house for me?”

The carpenter agreed, but he did so with a heavy heart. So when he was building the house, the passion was no longer there. It was shoddy workmanship. The people around him noticed, and they were sad to see him end such a sterling career in this way.

When the carpenter finished building the house, his Boss came over to inspect it. The man then faced the carpenter, took his hand, and placed the key of the house in his palm. “This house is yours,” the man said. “It’s our parting gift to you for all the years of service you gave the company.”

The carpenter was shocked. And then his heart was filled with painful regret. Oh, if he only knew he was building his own house, he would have done a better job!

Moral Lesson of the Story

We are the carpenter of our own life. Everyday we're building our character using our thoughts, our words and our deeds. We need to be the best and excellent all the time.This way, you'll live life without regrets.

Guidelines in Creating Affirmations

Edel shared her insights about our retreat that happened last Holy Week. That retreat made us realize how blessed we are because of the talents, treasures and time that we have. It made us focus even more on the dreams and aspirations we want to achieve for our life as we discover our life's purpose.

One valuable takeaway I've had was how to create powerful affirmations. And I'm going to share with you guidelines in creating affirmations as suggested by Jack Canfield.

1. It should be positive.
2. It should start with "I am"
3. It should be in present tense
4. It should be specific
5. It should contain a -ing verb form
6. It should contain a feeling word such as happily, gratefully, etc.
7. It should be brief
8. It should be personal

How Bo Sanchez Changed My Life

It all started in high school. I’ve been hearing a lot Bo Sanchez, most of the time from my high school friends, couple coordinators and friends in Youth for Christ. I read some of his articles but it’s his book entitled 8 

Secrets of the Truly Rich that made a mark in my heart.

Here’s how I got my 8 Secrets of the Truly Rich book.

It was the last day of our Chemical Engineering Board Exam in Manuel L. Quezon University in Manila. My friends and I (classmates in engineering) went out just to unwind in the busy streets of Rizal Avenue. We went to National Bookstore to look for Rubix cube (I learned to solve a Rubix Cube during our stay in Manila for the Board Exam). I saw one but I was not expecting the price so I just looked around the National Bookstore and noticed 8 Secrets of the Truly Rich.

I bought one copy for me and my future wife, Edel.

Edel and I read the book and it blessed us. The book opened our eyes to a lot of learning opportunities that continuously transformed us into a God-fearing, financial literate, a cheerful giver, and a loving individual.

We attended Truly Rich Seminar. We watched Bo Sanchez preaching through the preacherinbluejeans website every week (Thank God the PICC feast is also available online). We subscribed to Kerygma family. We subscribed to Bo Sanchez blog. We attended Kerygma Conference for the first time (Awaken the Spirit in You) in Ultra. We subscribed to Truly Rich Club. We bought Bo Sanchez’ book after book (I can’t count how many of Bo’s books we have bought because we have given away some of them to friends). In short, we’ve developed an open mind to experience everything the world has to offer.

I met a lot of friends. I met a lot of mentors. I saw a lot of business opportunities (internet marketing, blogging, investing in stocks, investing in real estate, franchising name it we have it). We became bookworms and we read a lot of books.

I wonder what would happen if I didn’t buy the book…

Edel gave me a surprise that I didn’t notice

Here’s the story. 

Valentines Day. I got home from work tired and exhausted. Even though I’m tired and exhausted I decided to give Edel a visit (which I always do – please take note that Edel is a good source of positive energy. One smile or hug or kiss from her can really expel the exhaustion from me). 

Most of the time Edel is doing some school tasks on her laptop upon my arrival. However, that day she’s using her niece’s laptop. I wonder why. 

So I asked her, “where’s your laptop?”

She responded, “Upstairs”. Then she requested me to get her laptop. I agreed.

I didn’t know that she did that on purpose. I didn’t know that there’s a surprise waiting for me upstairs. However, I failed to recognize that.

Here’s what happened. 

I went in her room. I was surprised that the lights were lit. That scene was very unusual but I didn’t mind. I saw her laptop sitting on her bed. I grabbed it then went out of the room. While walking, I noticed that there were pieces of paper posted on her mirror that says:

When you look to me I can see the GREATEST story LOVE has ever told!

I thought that those were affirmations. I thought the word “you” refers to the one looking at the mirror (which is Edel most of the time) and the word “me” refers to the mirror. I got confused, so I went downstairs to give Edel her laptop. 

Then I asked her, “what’s about those paper posted upstairs on the mirror?”

She smiled.

And then I told her that I didn’t get it. 

We went upstairs then as we open the room; I realized that there were a lot of papers hanging on the curtain. There’s also a paper posted on her TV saying “Happy Heart’s Day Ming.”

Gosh!

What happened to me? Why I didn’t notice this?

I failed to see the surprise Edel gave me. I asked for forgiveness and gave Edel a hug. I also greeted her and said that I love the surprise she gave me. 

I realized that I failed to see the blessings for being focused on the things that needed to be done.

With this incident, I realized that blessings are really everywhere. Most of the time, we fail to notice them because of our busyness. We fail to notice because we’re looking on other things. 

Bo Sanchez is right in his previous article. He said there that most of us are problem experts. We see problems as they are going to happen. By putting our attention on our problems we fail to see God’s blessings appearing in front of us.

I’m not saying that we don’t mind our problems. What I’m saying is that let’s be aware of the blessings coming our way. This way, we will not miss any magical moments like this. 

For sure God is giving us a lot of surprises from the moment we wake up each morning. But because we’re too much focused on the tasks that we need to accomplish within the day, we oftentimes fail to give Him thanks. We fail to see the blessings He is constantly giving us.

Appreciate the beauty of God’s surprises. He’s surprising us everyday.

Be Clear to Get What You Want

This morning, someone asked for my help with their automation concern. They want an excel file where in they’ll input their information and will give results automatically. 

However, we were discussing in circles because they were not sure of how they can do it. So, I told them that automation is just a process of simplifying the manual things we’re doing. If we don’t know how to do it manually, it will be very difficult for us to get the results that we want.

After our discussion, I realized that if we are not sure of the things that we want to have, the probability of not getting it will be high. Otherwise, the universe will conspire to give us what we want. 

As I was searching an image for this post, I stumble upon this Hugh Macleod's cartoon.

 

Do you think, the guy asking in this image will be a millionaire or an artist? My guess? Neither. Because he's unsure of what he wants.

I’m happy to be part of the universe that will conspire to give what you want. You are part of it as well. Keep on blessing others through your talents.

An Inspiring Video : Nick Vujicic

Found this video of Nick Vujicic while reading status messages in Bo Sanchez’ fan page. It’s really worthwhile looking for inspirational videos like this.

This is really an example of people making a dent in the universe. He may not have arms or limbs but he really made a mark in a lot of people’s heart. I believe that we can do that too.

Marketing Lessons from Seth Godin

For the past couple of days, we’ve been reading a lot of books. As far as I can remember I read almost three books in three weeks time. It’s a bit slow you might say but I like to note that I still have my Monday to Friday work, my blog posts daily, my daily conversations with my family, my weekend activities and preparations to my first ever Internet Marketing Workshop event.

And I’m excited to read a new book from Seth Godin entitled Meatball Sundae. Before I discuss that book (because I already have some idea what topics will be discussed in that book through Tito Tony and Edel’s stories), I’ll first share with you some marketing lessons I’ve learned from All Marketers are Liars Story Tellers.

• Find a product that you really, really like. In my case, I really love to read blog articles from my mentors (this includes Bo Sanchez, Seth Godin, Jomar Hilario, Janmck Hilado, and a lot more). I love reading a lot of books (Robert Allen, Mark Victor Hansen, Seth Godin, Bo Sanchez, etc). Lastly I really love to learn more about my finances, my health, and my relationships with my family, friends, colleagues and my God in short all aspects of my life.  I have this vision of becoming a role model in a society I belong. Through the help of these materials, I know I’ll get there someday.

• Tell the world about the product that you like. In other words, share your stories. Share how these products changed your life. Share your experiences through writing, through videos, through stories, and any form you choose. In my case, this blog and the some forms of social media (facebook, twitter, mail etc), enables me to share my stories to a bunch of people online. I create blog posts like these or shout-outs in my facebook page to share some key learnings that helped me grow. Sometimes, people are not fond of reading my posts but that’s okay. It is not intended for them anyway. I know I have attracted people having the same mindset. Luckily, you’re one of them.

• Live with your story. This is the most crucial part of marketing. Your followers (or the people you have attracted) need to see an inspiration in you. They need to see a proof that the product you are telling them really helped you. If it does not show, they will never believe in your story or worst they’ll look for someone that they can trust. A follower can really distinguish if you are lying or if you are telling the truth. So be really careful what you are sharing or selling. If you can’t do it, don’t say it. Walk the talk.

A successful marketer follows the principles above. Some people can really sell products they don’t like but there will come a time that people will notice it. Once the people notice it, definitely his sales will drop significantly and the worst thing that may happen? Trust will be lost.

Don’t lose that hard-earned trust.

Find a product you believe in. Share them. Walk the talk.

The Secret in Making a Dent in the Universe: Sticking To Your Game

Each and everyone of us have our own sets of skills. Every one of us has our own set of talents. Different people have different abilities. Yes there are maybe some common factors like interest in music, dancing, singing, playing musical instruments, painting, writing, public speaking and a lot more but we have different unique combination of these skills, talents and abilities.

Just what I’ve said in my previous post entitled The Secret in Making a Dent in the Universe: Be Yourself we don’t need to pretend just to leave a dent in the universe. Our unique set of talents, skills, and abilities are enough to inspire, to motivate, to make a difference in our universe.

No matter how the world mocks at you. No matter how the world ridicule us. We just to be ourselves and trust in the talents that we have, we can still make a difference.

To illustrate this, let me share one of my favorite stories from the book The One Minute Millionaire by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen. This is a true to life story of Sylvester Stallone.

In 1974 Sylvester was a broke, discouraged actor and screenwriter. While attending a boxing match he became inspired by a “nobody” boxer who “went the distance” with the great Mohammed Ali.

He rushed home and in a three-day burst of creative output produced the first draft of the screenplay entitled Rocky.

Down to his last $106, Stallone submitted his screenplay to his agent. A studio offered $20,000 with either Ryan O’Neal or Burt Reynolds playing the lead character. Stallone was excited by the offer but wanted to play the lead himself. He offered to act for free. He was told, “That’s not the way it works in Hollywood.” Stallone turned down the offer though he desperately needed the money.

Then they offered him $80,000 on the condition that he wouldn't play the lead. He turned them down again.

They told him that Robert Redford was interested, in which case they’d pay him $200,000. He turned them down once more.

They upped their offer to $300,000 for his script. He told them that he didn’t want to go through his whole life wondering “what if?”

They offered him $330,000. He told them that he’d rather not see the movie made if he couldn’t play the lead.

They finally agreed to let him play the lead. He was paid $20,000 for the script plus $340 per week minimum actor’s scale. After expenses, agent fees, and taxes he netted about $6,000 instead of $330,000.

In 1976 Stallone was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor. The movie Rocky won three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing. The Rocky series has since grossed almost $1 billion, making Sylvester Stallone an international movie star.

He believed that he can act well. He believed that he had the great script that can change his life.

You too can do it.

You too possess that great talent that can make a difference.

It may be not working right now. Just continue. Just continue in sharing your skills, talents and abilities. Just continue in trusting in your instincts. Just continue in sticking to your game.

One day, the universe will recognize it and will give you that spot where in you can make your mark.

That mark is your dent in the universe. That mark is your contribution to the universe. That mark is your legacy.

So no matter what happens, be yourself and stick to your game.

The Secret in Making a Dent in the Universe: Be Yourself

I read Bo Sanchez latest blog post and it inspired me to be me.

The first few paragraphs of Bo Sanchez’ latest blog post is an assurance that I’m on the right path. I have read that same line of thought from Seth Godin’s Linchpin. I believe that God created us with a special gift to share to the world. If we hide it from the world, the world will become a lesser place. The world will become just an average.

Each of us is uniquely created. We are different from everyone else. We have our own sets of skills. We have our own sets of talents. We have our own sets of personality. There is no one in the universe who shares the exact set of skills, talents, and personality just like you.

You are the only you. I’m the only me.

We need to know our purpose to make that difference. We need to know our purpose to make the world a better place. We need to know our purpose to make a dent in the universe.

How can we make a difference?

Simple. Be who you are. Create the best you.

Share the gift you have to the world.

How?

Create your own art based on your purpose.
Create your own art based on your talents.
Create your own art based on your personality.

Duplication : A practical way to multiply your time

God has given us the same opportunity. He has provided the same number of hours, minutes and seconds each day for us to maximize. We can’t buy extra hours to do the things we love (even the rich can't do that).

That’s it. All we have is 60 seconds in a minute. 60 minutes in an hour. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. 52 weeks per year. Nothing more, nothing less.

We can’t bring back the wasted time of our yesterdays just to have more time today. It does not work that way.

But the good news is there’s a powerful law of nature that can work for us. This law is called the Law of Duplication.

Duplication is all around us. We will not be able to live on this planet without our Mom and Dad. Everything will be extinct (or should I say nothing will exist today) if duplication does not exist.
That’s how nature works.

In order for us to have more time doing things we want to do, we need to maximize the Law of Duplication to its full potential. We need to duplicate ourselves. Duplication can be done by creating a team and/or using technology.

Creating a Team. I work in a manufacturing industry. We produce million units per year. I can’t imagine how many units can be produced if there’s only one person in the shop floor doing all the things from material warehousing to finished ingredient processing to packaging and shipping. If you’re that person, that would be very tiring right? That would be very, very toxic. That would require you to work more than 24 hours per day.

Use of Technology. Can you imagine if there’s no CDs, MP3s, etc? Your favorite singers will hate that PLAY button. Why? Because every time you hit that play button, these singers will come to you and sing your favorite songs. Hmmm… that would be fun if you’re the person to be entertained! But what if you are the singer? You’ll hate it right? Lastly, I could not imagine if two households hit the play button at the same time. If that happens, you’ll lose one fan right away.

That’s why we need to have a team and technology to duplicate ourselves to complete a certain task at a certain time. This would enable us to do other things that matters to us. This way, our time is duplicated as well.

Wealth Beliefs

I watched Bo Sanchez' Seminar on Video entitled Create your Wealth Beliefs. I got this CD from Truly Rich Club. I really admire Bo Sanchez' generosity. He's giving away a lot of free stuffs to his Truly Rich Club members.


Anyway, here's what I got from this talk. These are the wealth beliefs that changed Bo's life. He suggested that we use this wealth beliefs as a guide to create our own.

Managing Spare Time : Virtual Assistant + Serving GOD + Financial Education

I had a tremendous week.

My spare time is well spent. I can’t believe that I actually did those stuffs.

Anyway, let me share what happened to me this week.

I started my week with a bang. Just came from a blessed Easter Sunday. Edel and I celebrated the Easter Sunday attending the Grand Feast at SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia. I’m so blessed to have almost all of my mentors in one place. I talked to our financial mentor Dr. Dada Rosanes of International Marketing Group with her kids. I discussed virtual assistant stuffs with my Internet Marketing mentor Jomar Hilario while waiting patiently for the food queuing area. I listened to Bo Sanchez’ awesome preach, the first part of the Overcome Series. There are various published articles online that discusses the things that happened during the Grand Easter Feast.

Later that afternoon, Edel and I had a great full body massage at Rafraf together with Marvin located in Halang Calamba Laguna. After that Marvin, Edel and I discussed our future plans regarding our business. We’re on the path in making this a reality. Soon you’ll find out. This fuels me to start my week right. I’m so fired up!

I went to the office. I had mountains of things to do to start my week. I need to prepare the Post Campaign Analysis for Malaysia, prepare the March Month End Excess Inventory Report, submit the daily inventory report and the weekly service reports, give an orientation about the service and inventory reporting plus other stuff and attend a lot of meetings.

Anyway, these tasks are the things I need to accomplish within the week. Sounds like an easy task but most of these reports require half to one day to finish.  Imagine that. 

This is the exciting part. Every after I finished my day job, I look forward to finishing my assignments as a virtual assistant. Having two jobs at the same time requires proper time management (which I'm currently learning). My tasks as a virtual assistant are just simple. It only requires me to answer emails, to save the inquiries in a template in Microsoft Excel and provide a daily update regarding the status of the project to my client. In fact, this week, as far as I know, I answered on an average, 50 emails in less than 1 hour. Cool right?

Also, this week, I re-started my passion. I joined Laguna Feast’s Music Ministry. In fact, I just got home from the band practice. Of course, I played the guitar. I learned 4 new songs. I met new people (people who are very passionate in serving God’s people thru their talents). Just in case you want to be part of Laguna Feast you may email them at LagunaFeast@gmail.com.

One more thing, of course, I attended Wealth Academy’s Series 10 entitled Distinctions in the mind of Poor, Middle class and Rich discussed by Wealth Academy’s proponent and CEO Noel Arandilla. On my next post I will be sharing the things I learned from this series.

Laguna Feast, Boxing fight, bonding night, a new layout and a new domain

I had a fantastic weekend!

Why?

Four reasons.

First reason, I now have my own domain (didn’t you notice that the URL of this site is now www.elvinperia.com and not http://elvinperia.blogspot.com?). Of course some of you might ask what happened to elvinperia.blogspot.com well, let’s say that it reached a new level to SERVE you more stories, more articles that are close to my heart. You might as well notice that the political ads and other ads present in the previous layout are gone. I retained some ads that are highly recommended. These ads can definitely help you in the future (Bo Sanchez’ Truly Rich Club, Amaia Scapes, Trevi Towers, IMG and Cash in A Flash). These products/services are my top picks!

Speaking of SERVICE, Edel and I went to Laguna Feast yesterday and Jon Escoto (the preacher) gave a powerful talk on the key to prosperity. The Laguna Feast is my second reason. His talk was about SERVICE. We've been waiting for a Laguna Feast (see Edel's article) and now we're happy that our wish comes true (Law of Attraction is really great!). He said that in order for us to prosper (or to be rich) we need to serve, serve and serve. It may seem a lot of work (yes it is) but the fruits will be abundant if we do it right. Jon Escoto suggested the following things: In order to prosper we need to increase service scale and customer service satisfaction.

To demonstrate this clearly, let's take a look at Manny Pacquiao. Do you know why he’s rich? Two reasons. First reason, he has taken his boxing to the highest level. In fact on his latest fight with Clottey which happened on Dallas Stadium has 51,000 viewers (imagine that scale!) and add the millions of people watching the fight in Malls, in their homes etc. Second reason, he gives viewers a good reason to like his fight. He’s so fast combined with powerful punches. Boxing fans are excited how Manny Pacquiao beats his opponents. People, especially Pinoys are very much satisfied with his performance. He makes us proud to be Pinoy.

That's how service scale and customer service satisfaction applies. By the way, Manny Pacquiao's victory or rather the bonding with my uncle and cousins during the fight is the third reason why I had a fantastic weekend.

The fourth reason: I managed to meet my friends and schoolmates from grade school (time flies so fast!). We had a nice chit chat, delicious food and fun bonding time. I can’t wait for our next get together.As evidence, you can see our pictures in my facebook page.

Though these activities were very tiring, I'm happy I got to invest my precious time with my priorities in life. Spiritual, Relationships, and Work. How about you? How did your weekend go through? I hope it's aligned with your priorities in life as well.

Frogo the Frog who made that JUMP!

Recently, I’ve been playing Icy Tower in Facebook. The game’s objective is to reach the top of the tower by jumping on collapsing floors. This game reminds me of Ice Climber, a game in Family Computer when I was a kid. Now you have an idea how old I am. Laughs.

Also, it reminds me a story of the frog whose dream is to see the world outside the well.

The story goes like this.

There was a group of frogs living in the well. They live in that well since they were born. They never thought of hopping outside the well. Their ancestors told them stories of other frogs who dared to go out of the well.

Their ancestors tell them this horror story since they were a tadpole. The world outside this well is full of monsters. There was this young frog on his mid-20s (I’m using here Frog Calendar, okay? Believe me, their calendar is different from Gregorian calendar we use in our everyday life) who dares to jump off and leave this place. He never came back. He was eaten by monsters. He was eaten by giant monsters living outside this well.

These monsters have huge teeth that can crush every bone in your body. They have huge claws that would rip your skin apart. They use every inch of their strength to get you as a test subject in their biology class. So that they will dissect you and do anything and everything to make you suffer the rest of your life.

Every time a group of tadpole hears this story they were so scared. They were so scared to be eaten, to become test subject, to be dissected. They don’t want this to happen to them. So they never dared to jump out. They never did.

So they just play, eat, hop, jump, sleep and everything a typical group of frog is fond of doing. These activities were all done in the well.

But there was a frog who does not believe in this story. He believes that there’s a larger playground outside that well. In his mind he believes that the world outside the well is a larger playground where they could play, eat, hop, jump, sleep and everything a typical group of frog is fond of doing.

One day, he shared this idea on his parents. But his parents never believed him. They did not agree on a huge playground outside the well. They said that jumping off the well is a suicide.

However, Frogo has a different vision. He still sees a huge world outside the well.

Every day he trained so hard to reach the edge. Every day he works so hard. Every day he plans a strategy on how to use the walls of the well.

Then one day, he said to himself “today is the day to get out of the well.”

So he jumped as high as he could. He jumped and jumped until he was halfway through. At the middle of his ascent, he got tired. He is so exhausted. He started slipping on the side of the well. He started to worry. Other side of his mind said that he can’t make it but the other half keeps on pushing and reminding him that he’s near.

Of course, he trusted the other half of his brain, the one who reminded him to make that push. So he kept on jumping.

Eventually he got out of the well.

He saw the huge lake in front of him.

It was an overwhelming site. There were no monsters. There were no Biology students. Only a giant lake just like he saw on his vision.

He looked down on the well saying that his right. There’s a huge lake outside the well.

But his friend never heard him.

So he jumped off and enjoyed the huge lake he discovered.

There’s an ocean of opportunities outside your comfort zone. There are obstacles that block your path to success. But I tell you, most of the successful people (Bo Sanchez, Robert Kiyosaki, my IMG mentors, etc) did what Frogo did. They made that decision to jump outside their comfort zone.
