Inspiring Story from Coaching for Success Workshop

For the last three days of March, I attended a Coaching for Success workshop by BenchMark Consulting International held in Laguna Technopark Hotel. I and fifteen other participants from our company (Avon Products Manufacturing Inc) learned a lot from this workshop. We learned the difference between coaching from mentoring, coaching from brainstorming, coaching from counseling. We learned how to access the level 3 of listening where in there's no words needed just to understand the person you're talking to.

In short, we learned a lot in that 3-day workshop.

Towards the end of the workshop, the facilitators showed us an inspiring video about making a difference. The video is about a student whose name is Teddy Stallard (read the story below).

As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stallard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... he is a joy to be around.."

His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."

His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."

Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class."

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper That he got from a grocery bag Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stallard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to." After the children left, she cried for at least an hour.

On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets.."

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer.... The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stallard, MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.

Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stallard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference."

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you."

Money Working For You

What a week!

I guess last week is the most tiring and rewarding week of my life.

It is tiring because for the first time in my life I’m doing two jobs at the same time. I’m an employee at day and a virtual assistant at night. It is rewarding because I’ve learned a valuable lesson.

I learned the difference between money working for me and me working for money. Obviously I’m currently working for money and I’m happy that money is coming to me but there’s a challenge. My body is screaming! I could not have a good night sleep.

This just shows that human beings have our own sets of limitations. We can only work at the maximum of 16 hours a day to have good enough sleep. We need those 8 hours of sleep to have a healthy body and a refreshed mind. (Additional note : Drinking of energy drinks is not a permanent solution for this. Take note, NOT THE PERMANENT SOLUTION because I know that there are very hardworking people out there who drinks a lot of energy drinks just to stay awake. This is very, very unhealthy.)

Money on the other hand can work 24 hours a day for us. No limit. No rest day. No holidays. No weekends. No summer breaks. Money works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

You might ask? How can I do that?

First, you must understand how money works. Second, you must know how to handle your money by having the courage to discipline yourself and lastly, find a way to increase your sources of income.

Fortunately, I am part of a group that can help you have your money working for you. The group is called International Marketing Group (IMG). New Feature in Blogger : Blogger Template Designer

Every day I’m opening my inbox for new messages.

And today, there’s nothing quite new. Nothing unusual. I got an email from Seth Godin, from Kerygma Family (Didache, Sabbath and the Readings for today), from Truly Rich Club (which includes Godwhispers and Wealth Strategies Newsletters), from Facebook and Twitter updates.
As I checked on my spam messages, I notice something very, very interesting. This message is not really a spam but very, very useful indeed. The email? You might ask. It’s from Blogger Team.

They have announced a new feature in blogger. I know most of you would really, really love this new feature. It will help you design your own blogger templates without the hassle of understanding the complex HTML codes. This is good news right?

Many of the nation’s most iconic landmarks are expected to dim their lights in the largest call for action on climate change. Cities from around the world, from Europe to Africa, are expected to join in.

Here are some tips on how to save our mother earth.

• Invest in power-boards with “off” switches, so you can turn off standby power at night – by turning appliances like TVs off at the wall, it doesn’t waste energy and carbon.
• When you switch to digital TV, choose a set with the Energy Star logo – Energy Star has the lowest standby rating and good overall efficiency.
• Install energy efficient lights - they run on a fraction of the energy and will last a lot longer.
• Double the efficiency of your car by putting another person in it! – this is an easy way to reduce your mobility footprint.
• Make a commitment to walk, ride or take public transport to work regularly – it will save money, and help you stay fit.
• Cut out one flight this year – air travel contributes a lot of greenhouse gases. Choosing to holiday closer to home, or avoiding business travel with teleconferencing, can make a really big difference.
• Ditch the take away coffee cup and get a re-usable one – this will reduce landfill.
• Only buy recycled toilet paper – it’s got a lot better since the early days, and it means less forest destruction for a clean bum!
• Recycle old gadgets – old mobiles, iPods, TVs. Computers and radios contain lots of material that can be recycled such gold, copper and coltan. None of this needs to end up as landfill.
• Get a couple of chooks! Chickens eat food scraps and turn it into fertilizer, and they produce free eggs.
• If you're renovating check out what recycled products are available – this will reduce pressure on the world’s forests which help to stabilize our climate.
• Start a worm farm - the worms will reduce the organic waste going to landfill and it's something the kids can enjoy.

Laguna Feast, Boxing fight, bonding night, a new layout and a new domain

I had a fantastic weekend!

Why?

Four reasons.

First reason, I now have my own domain (didn’t you notice that the URL of this site is now www.elvinperia.com and not http://elvinperia.blogspot.com?). Of course some of you might ask what happened to elvinperia.blogspot.com well, let’s say that it reached a new level to SERVE you more stories, more articles that are close to my heart. You might as well notice that the political ads and other ads present in the previous layout are gone. I retained some ads that are highly recommended. These ads can definitely help you in the future (Bo Sanchez’ Truly Rich Club, Amaia Scapes, Trevi Towers, IMG and Cash in A Flash). These products/services are my top picks!

Speaking of SERVICE, Edel and I went to Laguna Feast yesterday and Jon Escoto (the preacher) gave a powerful talk on the key to prosperity. The Laguna Feast is my second reason. His talk was about SERVICE. We've been waiting for a Laguna Feast (see Edel's article) and now we're happy that our wish comes true (Law of Attraction is really great!). He said that in order for us to prosper (or to be rich) we need to serve, serve and serve. It may seem a lot of work (yes it is) but the fruits will be abundant if we do it right. Jon Escoto suggested the following things: In order to prosper we need to increase service scale and customer service satisfaction.

To demonstrate this clearly, let's take a look at Manny Pacquiao. Do you know why he’s rich? Two reasons. First reason, he has taken his boxing to the highest level. In fact on his latest fight with Clottey which happened on Dallas Stadium has 51,000 viewers (imagine that scale!) and add the millions of people watching the fight in Malls, in their homes etc. Second reason, he gives viewers a good reason to like his fight. He’s so fast combined with powerful punches. Boxing fans are excited how Manny Pacquiao beats his opponents. People, especially Pinoys are very much satisfied with his performance. He makes us proud to be Pinoy.

That's how service scale and customer service satisfaction applies. By the way, Manny Pacquiao's victory or rather the bonding with my uncle and cousins during the fight is the third reason why I had a fantastic weekend.

The fourth reason: I managed to meet my friends and schoolmates from grade school (time flies so fast!). We had a nice chit chat, delicious food and fun bonding time. I can’t wait for our next get together.As evidence, you can see our pictures in my facebook page.

Though these activities were very tiring, I'm happy I got to invest my precious time with my priorities in life. Spiritual, Relationships, and Work. How about you? How did your weekend go through? I hope it's aligned with your priorities in life as well.

Three in One Plus One

It's been days since my last blog post. There were a lot of stuffs that happened this week. Technically, I became busy creating and promoting websites for the whole week. With this I have actually finished three websites. I also created a twitter and a facebook page for each site. And by the way, it took me 3 hours per night to finish all these tasks (except last Wednesday). Whew.

I have another site-creation project but I’m still waiting for my partner to provide me the important details needed to finish it. Soon, I’ll be announcing and promoting that one as well.

Edel Ramilo’s blog site. This one is an existing site, a site for my partner in crime. After the change, she got inspired and committed to create tons and tons of blog posts. I hope this will result to compiling books in the future. Laughs! By the way, she posted a thank you message for me on her blog. Feel free to check it out too.

Amaia Scapes Laguna. This is a website for the new property developed by Amaia Land here in Calamba, Laguna. Amaia Land is a sub brand of Avida Land under the Ayala Group of companies. I just love the green feel of this site. Soon, I’ll be having one unit here for my partner in crime and in case we want to transfer to another location, this unit will be a source of passive income in the future. Either way, it is in favor on our side. We’ve done the math and it’s possible.

Trevi Towers. This is a website for a condo unit in Makati City. This property is along Chino Roces Avenue. It is just five minutes away from the Makati central business district. Just like in Amaia Scapes, we are committed to purchase a property here and invest it in the future. Getting a property on Trevi Towers is a good choice because it is very near the IMG office (where we spend most of our Wednesday and Saturday nights) and it has a very attractive condo design. By the way, this is the first site I created this week.

Next week, my task is to improve on my website too. It’ll be a very interesting change. I’m very sure of that. After all the practice I’ve made on these three + 1 projects, I know it’ll be a great site. You’ll see next week. So stay tuned.
